The magical seaside resort of Mangawhai is only 80 minutes drive north from Auckland or 50 minutes south from Whangarei.
Golf
A first class 18 hole all weather golf course with pro shop and well-known resident coach attracts many groups with its ongoing tournaments and up to the minute facilities. It is classed as being in the top 20 golf courses in the country. The clubhouse provides dinners, has a bar and a big screen for those not to be missed sporting fixtures that can only be seen on sky TV. Bookings are essential during the holiday period.
Tennis
Mangawhai now has a first class facility with four astro turf courts and lights on two of these courts. A court can be hired for $10/hour plus $5 for the lights should you need them. For regular tennis a membership fee is only $60. Purchase a key and make the booking at Bammas shop in the Village. Therefore it is necessary to make the booking during shop hours.
Cafes and Restaurants
With five to choose from (two at the Wood St shops and three at the Village) eating out will not be a problem. There are also two fish and chip shops and the Deli has delicious pies and Asian food. This is a great selection for a small place.
Tavern
The old Mangawhai pub is still going strong. New owners in 2005 have revitalised the place while continuing the strong representation of popular bands during the holiday season. The regular Sunday roast eaten while listening to the accomplished jazz singing of Maura Flower is a real treat.
The Club
The Bowling Club has expanded into a chartered Club so as long as you sign in you are welcome to enjoy the evening meal as well as the entertainment and regular events that are available. Petanque is on Thursdays at 2pm. There is also the big screen Sky TV.
Art
Mangawhai has an interesting art community, which is worth fossicking out. The Art Trail is available only on the Walking Weekend at the moment.
We are proud of the Smashed Pipi Gallery, which appears to be as good as anything in Australasia. It specialises in craft art including pottery and glass but there is some art and great wall hangings. The gallery is also the local outlet for our famous Bennetts’ Chocolates. Ask any chocolatier and they will have heard of Bennetts of Mangawhai.
Mangawhai Focus
This newspaper arrived at the beginning of 2006. Look out for it as it is full of local news and interesting articles.
There is also plenty of accommodation to suit every budget from camping grounds to award winning boutique accommodation.
